Course Title
Saving More Animals Responsibly Together (SMART)A forward-thinking course that explores the evolution of animal welfare and introduces the SMART approach—focused on access to care, community impact, and responsible outcomes. This training examines how the focus on live release rate (LRR) has shaped sheltering decisions and challenges the idea that a single metric can define success. Participants will learn a practical framework for modern sheltering that balances lifesaving, public safety, and community needs.
Course Title
Understanding Behavioral Euthanasia
Behavioral euthanasia is one of the most difficult decisions in animal welfare. This course provides a compassionate, practical framework for understanding behavioral euthanasia and the factors that should be considered when faced with these challenging cases.
Participants will explore behavior, risk assessment, animal welfare, available resources, alternatives, and the role of professional judgment in making difficult decisions. The goal is not to provide a formula for when an animal should be euthanized, but to help professionals better understand the complexity of these decisions and approach them thoughtfully, ethically, and compassionately.
